Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie, one of the most famous border crossings during the division of Berlin, is a symbol of the Cold War and the former division of the city. Established in 1961 after the construction of the Berlin Wall, this crossing was mainly used by diplomats and foreign tourists to enter and leave East and West Berlin. Today, Checkpoint Charlie is an important historical site and a magnet for tourists who visit the replicas of the checkpoint and the famous "You Are Now Leaving the American Sector" sign. The nearby Wall Museum tells the moving stories of escape attempts across the inner-German border.
